Winter feeding scheme reaches 100% of learners in need

12 June 2026

Thanks to three local partners and a determined volunteer team, every qualifying learner now receives a hot, balanced meal each school day this winter.

It is a hard truth that a hungry child cannot learn. A rumbling stomach drowns out even the best lesson. This winter, Stars Secondary School reached a milestone we are deeply proud of: through our expanded National Schools Nutrition Programme, every single qualifying learner now receives a hot, balanced meal each and every school day.

The numbers tell part of the story — more than 4 000 meals served over the winter term, prepared fresh each morning in our school kitchen by a team of parent volunteers who arrive before dawn. But the real story is told in the faces of the children who line up, bowls in hand, and in the teachers who report classrooms that are calmer, more focused and more alive than before.

The expansion was made possible by three local partners — Thabong Bakery, Marula Fresh Produce and the Nkosi Family Trust — who stepped forward when the School Governing Body put out the call. “We grew up in this community,” said one of the donors at the launch. “Feeding these children isn’t charity. It’s an investment in the doctors, teachers and engineers this neighbourhood will produce.”

One mother, Mrs Dlamini, whose two sons are in Grades 8 and 10, put it plainly: “Some mornings, the meal here was the difference. I could send my boys to school knowing they would eat. You cannot imagine the weight that lifts off a parent’s shoulders.”

Crucially, the programme is built on accountability. Every meal voucher is confirmed only once the food actually reaches the child — not when it is ordered, not when it is delivered to the gate, but when it is in the hands of the learner it was meant for. That single design choice keeps the programme honest, and it is the same principle of verified delivery that runs through everything we do.

Families who would like to confirm a learner’s place on the scheme can do so confidentially through the front office. And to anyone in our community who wishes to give — whether a sack of maize meal or an hour of your morning — our kitchen door is always open.

Questions? Guardians can reach the front office on 012 000 0000 or through the parent portal.
