New science laboratory officially opened

30 May 2026

A fully equipped physical-sciences laboratory was opened by the district director, doubling our practical capacity — and one Grade 11 learner stole the show.

There was a buzz in the air on Friday, 30 May, as learners, parents, donors and dignitaries gathered to officially open our brand-new Physical Sciences laboratory. The ribbon was cut by the district director, who told the crowd that the facility “sets a standard that many far better-resourced schools would envy.”

The new lab doubles our practical capacity at a stroke. Where Grade 10 to 12 science classes once had to share equipment on a rotation, every class can now perform hands-on experiments every single week. The room is fitted with class sets of microscopes, a proper fume cupboard, gas and water at every bench, and a smartboard for live demonstrations that the whole class can see.

But it was a learner who stole the show. Sixteen-year-old Amahle B., a Grade 11 physical sciences star, was invited to perform the first official experiment — a flame test that lit up the room in brilliant greens and reds. “I’ve read about these reactions in textbooks for two years,” she beamed afterwards. “Seeing them with my own eyes, in our own lab — that’s the day I knew I want to be a chemical engineer.”

The laboratory was funded through a partnership between the School Governing Body, alumni donations and a generous grant from a local mining company’s education fund. It stands as proof of what a community can build when it pulls together with a single purpose: giving its children the tools to dream bigger.

Science teacher Mr S. Botha, who championed the project for three years, was quietly emotional. “Curiosity is the engine of science,” he said. “Today we gave our learners a place to be curious. I cannot wait to see where it takes them.”
